Why rent a car in Crete?
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and one of the most rewarding destinations for road trips in the Mediterranean. A rental car is the best way to explore the island’s remarkable variety of landscapes, from the dramatic Samaria Gorge and the Minoan ruins of Knossos to the turquoise waters of Elafonisi and the unspoiled villages of the White Mountains.
Pick up your car directly at Heraklion Airport or Chania Airport and start exploring the island immediately after arrival. For more destinations across the country, see car rental in Greece.
Exploring Crete by car
Routes and highlights across Crete
Crete is best explored by car, as public transport between towns is limited and many of the island’s most scenic spots are far from the main coastal strip. The E75 national road runs east-west along the northern coast, connecting Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania. For a more scenic alternative, the southern coastal road passes through Agia Galini, Matala and the Libyan Sea villages. The Samaria Gorge trailhead near Chania is reachable in about an hour from Heraklion. The Lasithi Plateau in the east is a rewarding inland drive through mountain villages and fertile farmland. Driving conditions in Crete
Roads in the north of Crete are well maintained and straightforward to navigate. Southern and mountain roads are narrower and more winding, but perfectly driveable with a standard rental car. A 4×4 is only necessary for very remote tracks. Fuel stations are plentiful along the northern coastal road but less frequent in the south and mountains, so it is worth filling up before heading into rural areas. Signage is in both Greek and Latin script, making navigation manageable for international visitors.
Best time to rent a car in Crete
April through October is the main season for visiting Crete, with the warmest and driest conditions. May and June are particularly good months for driving, as roads are quieter than in July and August and the landscape is still green from spring rains. September and October offer warm sea temperatures with noticeably fewer crowds. Winter is quiet, with most tourist facilities closed, but the island remains fully accessible for independent exploration.
