Picking up your rental car at Florence Airport
About Florence Airport (FLR)
Florence Amerigo Vespucci Airport (IATA: FLR) is located approximately 5 km northwest of the city centre, just outside the suburb of Peretola. It is a compact, single-terminal airport handling domestic and European routes. Car rental desks are in the arrivals area, with vehicle collection in the rental car zone directly outside the terminal. A tram line connects the airport to the city centre, but for exploring the wider Tuscan region a rental car remains the most practical option.
Getting on the road from Florence Airport
The airport sits just off the A11 motorway, which heads west toward Pisa (about 80 km, under an hour) and connects to the A1 heading south toward Siena and Rome. The Chianti route (Via Chiantigiana) begins south of the city and winds through Greve in Chianti and Castellina toward Siena, around 75 km in total. Pisa is approximately 80 km west on the A11. Siena is around 75 km south via the Firenze-Siena superstrada, taking about an hour. Rome is approximately 280 km south on the A1, around 2.5 hours.
Why pick up at the airport rather than in the city
Florence city centre operates a restricted traffic zone (ZTL) covering most of the historic centre. Driving into or within the ZTL without a permit results in automatic camera fines that arrive weeks after your trip. Picking up your car at the airport and driving directly to destinations outside the ZTL, or to the wider Tuscan region, avoids this entirely. For more about driving in the area, see car rental in Florence and car rental in Italy.
