Why rent a car in Ibiza?
Ibiza is famous for its nightlife, but the island has much more to offer than its clubs and beaches. A rental car gives you easy access to the peaceful north of the island, with its pine forests, secluded coves and the charming market town of Santa Gertrudis, as well as the UNESCO-listed old town of Ibiza city and the quieter beaches of the west coast.
Pick up your car directly at Ibiza Airport and start exploring the island immediately after arrival. For more destinations across the islands, see car rental in the Balearic Islands.
Exploring Ibiza by car
Routes and highlights across Ibiza
Ibiza is much more than its famous nightlife. A rental car opens up a completely different side of the island, away from the resort areas and into the rural interior and quieter northern coast. Dalt Vila, the UNESCO-listed walled old town of Ibiza City, is best visited on foot, but reaching the beaches of the north and west requires a car. Cala Bassa and Cala Conta on the western coast are approximately 15 km from Ibiza Town and offer some of the clearest water on the island. The hippie market at Las Dalias near San Carlos in the north runs on Saturdays and is about 15 km from the town via the C733 road. Sant Joan in the remote northern tip of the island is a traditional whitewashed village far removed from the club scene and reachable in around 30 minutes from the town. Driving and parking in Ibiza
Ibiza is a small island and driving between the main points is straightforward. The main road connects the airport and Ibiza Town to the resort of San Antonio on the west coast in about 20 minutes. Parking near the beaches in peak summer is very competitive and some roads near popular coves are closed to non-resident vehicles during the busiest months, with shuttle buses operating instead. Ibiza Airport (IATA: IBZ) is located just 7 km southwest of Ibiza Town and has car rental desks in the arrivals hall.
Best time to rent a car in Ibiza
May and early June, and September, are the best months to rent a car in Ibiza. The island is warm, the beaches are accessible without the extreme summer crowds, and the roads are navigable without the traffic that builds in July and August. Peak summer brings very heavy traffic near the club areas and the most popular beaches, with some coastal roads genuinely congested in the evenings. The island is largely closed from November to April, with most rental companies and many facilities operating only during the summer season.
