Why rent a car at Kos Airport?
Kos Airport (KGS), also known as Hippocrates Airport, is the main gateway to the island of Kos. Renting a car directly at the airport allows you to start your trip immediately after landing and reach your hotel or resort without waiting for taxis or transfer buses.
From the airport, you can easily drive to popular destinations such as Kos Town, Tigaki, Marmari, Kardamena, and the island’s many beaches. If you would like to explore more of the region, visit our main page for car rental in the Dodecanese Islands.
Picking up your rental car at Kos Airport
About Kos Airport (KGS)
Kos Hippocrates Airport (IATA: KGS) is located approximately 26 km southwest of Kos Town, near the village of Antimacheia in the centre of the island. It is one of the busier Greek island airports, handling primarily charter and low-cost routes from northern Europe during the summer season. The terminal is a single building. Car rental desks are in the arrivals area, with vehicles collected in the car park in front of the terminal. Because the airport sits roughly in the middle of the island, it is well positioned for exploring both the eastern resort areas and the quieter western end of Kos.
Getting on the road from Kos Airport
Kos is a long, narrow island and the main road runs its full length from east to west. From the airport, Kos Town is approximately 26 km east, a drive of around 25 minutes on the main road. The resort of Kardamena is about 8 km south of the airport, one of the closest resorts to the terminal. Kefalos and the beaches of the western peninsula are approximately 15 km southwest. Mastichari on the north coast, from where ferries depart for Kalymnos and Pserimos, is about 5 km north. The Asklepion, the ancient healing sanctuary of Hippocrates above Kos Town, is approximately 28 km east from the airport.
Why pick up at the airport rather than in the city
Kos Airport’s central position on the island makes it the ideal starting point for any itinerary, whether you are heading to Kos Town, the western beaches, or the quieter inland villages. Public transport on Kos connects the main resorts but does not cover the full island well, and taxis from the airport to the eastern or western ends can be expensive. Collecting a car at the airport gives you direct access to all parts of the island from the moment of arrival. For more about driving in the area, see car rental in Kos and car rental in Greece.
