Why rent a car in Lefkada?
Lefkada is one of the few Greek islands accessible by road, connected to the mainland by a floating bridge. Known for its spectacular west coast beaches, particularly Porto Katsiki and Egremni, the island rewards exploration by car. A rental car gives you easy access to the quieter east coast villages, the windsurfing hotspot of Vassiliki and the scenic mountain interior.
Pick up your car directly at Lefkada Airport (Preveza) and start exploring the island immediately after arrival. For more destinations across the islands, see car rental in the Ionian Islands.
Exploring Lefkada by car
Routes and highlights across Lefkada
Lefkada is the only Ionian island connected to the Greek mainland by a causeway and swing bridge, which makes it uniquely accessible by car without a ferry crossing. The island’s most celebrated beaches are on the western coast, where the Ionian Sea has carved dramatic white cliffs into the limestone headlands. Porto Katsiki, consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in Greece, is approximately 38 km south from the town via the winding west coast road. The approach involves a steep descent to the beach. Egremni beach, similarly dramatic and accessed by a long staircase, is a few kilometres north of Porto Katsiki. The village of Agios Nikitas on the northwest coast, about 12 km from Lefkada Town, is the most picturesque of the island’s coastal settlements. The inland mountain villages of Karya and Englouvi, known for their traditional lace-making and lentil cultivation, are reachable by a scenic road through the island’s forested interior. Driving conditions in Lefkada
The main road from the causeway to Lefkada Town and down the east coast is well maintained and straightforward. The west coast road to Porto Katsiki is narrower, winding and requires careful driving, particularly on the descent to the beach. Mountain roads into the interior are similarly narrow but rewarding. The nearest airport is Preveza Airport (IATA: PVK), located on the mainland approximately 25 km northeast of Lefkada Town across the causeway, with car rental facilities available on site.
Best time to rent a car in Lefkada
May, June and September offer the best conditions for driving in Lefkada. The west coast beaches are at their most spectacular in clear weather with calm seas. July and August bring the strongest summer winds, which can make the sea rough on the exposed western beaches but create ideal conditions for the windsurfing competitions held at Vasiliki in the south of the island. Spring brings lush green hillsides and very few other visitors on the mountain roads.
