Day trips and routes from Madrid
Madrid’s central position on the Iberian Peninsula makes it one of the best starting points for road trips in Spain. Toledo is just 75 km south via the A-42 motorway and is one of the most rewarding day trips from the capital, with its cathedral, El Greco museum and medieval streets. Segovia is approximately 90 km northwest via the A-6 and AP-61, and is famous for its Roman aqueduct and its castle. Ávila, another UNESCO World Heritage city, is around 110 km west via the A-5. For longer drives, Salamanca is about two hours from Madrid, and the Sierra de Gredos mountain range offers scenic driving through forests and reservoir landscapes. Driving and parking in Madrid
Madrid has an extensive urban motorway network, with the M-30 ring road encircling the city centre and the M-40 forming a wider outer ring. The city centre operates a low-emission zone called Madrid Central, which restricts access for most non-resident vehicles. Fines for unauthorised entry are applied automatically via cameras. Most visitors are better served by picking up their car at Madrid Airport and using it for day trips outside the city, leaving the car parked at their hotel for days spent sightseeing in the centre. Underground car parks are available near the main plazas, but rates in the centre are high.
Best time to rent a car in Madrid
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for driving around Madrid and the surrounding Castilian plateau. Summers in the interior of Spain are very hot, with temperatures in Madrid regularly exceeding 38 degrees Celsius in July and August. The cities of Toledo, Segovia and Ávila are also extremely busy with tourists in summer. October and November offer mild temperatures and noticeably quieter roads, while spring brings green landscapes along the Sierra de Guadarrama and the river valleys north of the city.
