Why rent a car in Menorca?
Menorca is the most unspoiled of the Balearic Islands, known for its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, turquoise waters and well-preserved prehistoric sites. A rental car is the ideal way to explore the island’s two contrasting coastlines, the historic capital of Ciutadella in the west and the more sheltered beaches of the south, all at your own pace and away from the crowds.
Pick up your car directly at Menorca Airport and start exploring the island immediately after arrival. For more destinations across the islands, see car rental in the Balearic Islands.
Exploring Menorca by car
Routes and highlights across Menorca
Menorca is the quietest and most unspoilt of the Balearic Islands, and a rental car is essential for exploring its many hidden coves and prehistoric sites. The main road, the Me-1, runs east to west across the island connecting Mahón in the east to Ciutadella in the west, a drive of about 45 km that takes around 40 minutes. From this central axis, narrow roads branch off to the coast, with most beaches reachable by car followed by a short walk. The north coast around Cap de Cavalleria is dramatically different from the south, with wilder landscapes and fewer tourists. The Bronze Age settlement of Naveta des Tudons near Ciutadella, one of the oldest prehistoric monuments in the Balearics, is just off the main road and worth a stop. For more destinations, see car rental in the Balearic Islands or car rental in Spain.
Driving conditions in Menorca
The main road across the island is well maintained and straightforward to drive. Secondary roads to the beaches are narrow, sometimes unpaved for the final section, and can be challenging when meeting oncoming traffic. Many of the most beautiful coves on the north coast require a short walk from a roadside parking area. Parking at popular beaches fills quickly on summer mornings, so arriving early is advisable. Menorca Airport is located just 5 km southwest of Mahón, making it a convenient starting point for exploring the island.
Best time to rent a car in Menorca
Menorca is at its best in May, June and September. The island is significantly less crowded than Mallorca or Ibiza throughout the season, but July and August still bring enough visitors to make parking at the most popular beaches competitive. Spring is particularly rewarding for driving, with wildflowers along the rural roads and the prehistoric sites largely to yourself. The island is quiet from October to April, with limited rental availability outside the summer season.
