Exploring Munich and Bavaria by car
Day trips and routes from Munich
Munich is one of the best cities in Europe for road trips into spectacular mountain scenery. Neuschwanstein Castle, the fairy-tale hilltop palace that inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle, is approximately 120 km southwest via the A95 and B17 roads. The Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) runs northward from Füssen through Augsburg toward Würzburg, passing medieval towns and baroque churches along a 460 km route — the section from Füssen to Augsburg takes around two hours and is one of Germany’s most scenic drives. The Austrian Alps begin just south of the city: Garmisch-Partenkirchen, at the foot of the Zugspitze (Germany’s highest mountain), is about 90 km south via the A95. Lake Constance (Bodensee) is approximately 180 km west, and Salzburg in Austria is just 140 km east via the A8. For more destinations, see car rental in Germany and car rental in Austria.
Driving and parking in Munich
Munich has a modern and well-signposted motorway network with the A9, A8, A95 and A99 ring road connecting the city to all major directions. The city centre operates a Low Emission Zone (Umweltzone) requiring a green environmental sticker, which most modern rental cars already have, confirm with your rental company before pickup. Parking in the city centre is available in several multi-storey car parks near Marienplatz and the English Garden, though rates are high. Munich Airport (Franz Josef Strauss, IATA: MUC) is located approximately 29 km northeast of the city centre and connects directly to the A92 motorway.
Best time to rent a car in Munich
Spring and early summer are excellent for driving the Bavarian Alps and the Romantic Road, with snow-capped peaks and green valleys. Late September brings Oktoberfest, which draws enormous crowds to Munich city itself but leaves the surrounding countryside and the mountain roads peaceful. Winter offers the possibility of driving through snow-covered Alpine scenery, but mountain pass roads such as the Deutsche Alpenstraße may be closed between November and April. Summer is warm and the roads to Neuschwanstein can be congested, particularly on summer weekends.
