Why rent a car in Mykonos?
Mykonos is one of Greece’s most glamorous islands, famous for its whitewashed Cycladic architecture, vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches. A rental car gives you easy access to the quieter parts of the island beyond the main town, including the traditional settlement of Ano Mera, the archaeological site of Delos nearby and the less crowded beaches of the north and east coast that are difficult to reach by public transport.
Pick up your car directly at Mykonos Airport and start exploring the island immediately after arrival. For more destinations across the islands, see car rental in the Cyclades.
Exploring Mykonos by car
Routes and highlights across Mykonos
Mykonos is a small island and a rental car is one of the most practical ways to explore beyond the main town and the closest beaches. The island’s most famous beaches are spread along the southern coast: Psarou, Platis Gialos, Paradise and Super Paradise are all reachable within 15 to 20 minutes from Mykonos Town. Ano Mera, the only traditional village on the island, is about 8 km east of the town and is far quieter than the coastal resort areas. The monastery of Panagia Tourliani in Ano Mera is one of the most significant religious sites on the island. The windmills above Mykonos Town are within walking distance of the port, but a car is useful for reaching the more remote northern beaches such as Agios Sostis, which are quieter and less developed. For more destinations, see car rental in the Cyclades or car rental in Greece.
Driving conditions in Mykonos
Roads on Mykonos are generally in good condition on the main routes. The old town of Mykonos, known as Chora, is largely pedestrianised and impossible to navigate by car. Most visitors park at the edge of the town and walk in. The roads to the southern beaches are well travelled and clearly marked. In peak summer, the road toward Paradise Beach can become congested in the late afternoon. Fuel stations are available near the airport and on the main road toward Ano Mera. The Mykonos Airport is located just 4 km from the town centre, making airport pickup very straightforward.
Best time to rent a car in Mykonos
Mykonos is one of the busiest islands in the Aegean in July and August, and traffic and parking near the town and popular beaches can be challenging during this period. May, June and September offer a more relaxed experience, with comfortable temperatures and far less congestion. The island is very quiet from October to April, with most rental companies and many restaurants and hotels closed for the winter. If visiting outside peak season, confirm rental availability in advance.
