Exploring Naxos by car
Routes and highlights across Naxos
Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades and offers more varied scenery and a more authentic atmosphere than its neighbours Mykonos and Santorini. A rental car is the best way to explore beyond the beaches and into the island’s remarkable interior. The Tragaea plateau in the centre of the island is a fertile basin of olive trees, Byzantine churches and traditional villages including Filoti, Apeiranthos and Halki, all reachable within 30 to 40 minutes from Naxos Town. Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades at 1,001 metres, rises above the Tragaea and is accessible from the village of Filoti. The long sandy beaches of Agia Anna, Plaka and Mikri Vigla stretch along the western coast approximately 5 to 15 km south of the town. The Kouros statues, two unfinished giant marble figures abandoned in ancient quarries, are located near Melanes (7 km from the town) and Apollonas in the north (about 40 km). For more destinations, see car rental in the Cyclades or car rental in Greece.
Driving conditions in Naxos
Roads on Naxos are in generally good condition on the main routes. The road through the Tragaea plateau is well paved and passes through some of the most beautiful inland scenery in the Cyclades. Mountain roads beyond the main villages can be narrow and unpaved in places but are manageable with a standard car in dry conditions. Naxos Airport (IATA: JNX) is located just 3 km south of Naxos Town and has car rental facilities, making airport pickup the natural starting point for any visit.
Best time to rent a car in Naxos
May, June and September are ideal for exploring Naxos by car. The island is popular but significantly less overcrowded than Santorini or Mykonos throughout the season. July and August bring warm weather and busy beaches along the western coast, but the inland villages and mountain roads remain quiet and uncongested. The island has a longer season than some smaller Cycladic islands, with many facilities open into October.
