Why rent a car at Palermo Airport?
Palermo Airport (PMO), also known as Falcone–Borsellino Airport, is one of the main airports serving Sicily. Renting a car directly at the airport allows you to start your journey immediately after landing and avoid waiting for taxis or public transport.
From the airport, you can easily reach Palermo city, Cefalù, Trapani, and many destinations across the island. If you would like to explore the city itself, you can also visit our main page for car rental in Palermo.
Picking up your rental car at Palermo Airport
About Palermo Airport (PMO)
Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport (IATA: PMO) is located approximately 30 km west of Palermo city centre, near the town of Cinisi. It is Sicily’s second busiest airport after Catania and handles a wide range of domestic and European routes year-round, with additional charter traffic during summer. The terminal is a single modern building and well-organised. Car rental desks are in the arrivals area with vehicle collection in the dedicated rental car zone in the car park adjacent to the terminal. The airport is named after the two anti-Mafia judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, who were assassinated in 1992.
Getting on the road from Palermo Airport
The airport connects directly to the A29 motorway, which runs east toward Palermo and west toward Trapani. Palermo city centre is approximately 30 km east, around 25 to 30 minutes on the A29. Trapani is approximately 55 km west, around 45 minutes. Segesta, the remarkably preserved ancient Greek temple set in open countryside, is about 40 km southwest via the A29, reachable in around 35 minutes. Cefalù, the medieval seaside town on the northern coast with a famous Norman cathedral, is approximately 70 km east of the airport via the A19, around 55 minutes. Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples are about 130 km south via the A19 and SS189, around 90 minutes.
Why pick up at the airport rather than in the city
Palermo city centre has a ZTL restricted traffic zone covering the historic area, which makes driving into the centre complicated for visitors. Picking up at the airport and driving directly to your hotel or first destination outside the city avoids this entirely. For a Sicilian road trip taking in Segesta, Agrigento, the south coast, and the east of the island, starting from the airport is more practical than collecting a car from the city centre.
