Picking up your rental car at Perugia Airport
About Perugia Airport (PEG)
Perugia San Francesco d’Assisi Airport (IATA: PEG) is a small regional airport located approximately 12 km east of Perugia, near the town of Sant’Egidio. It serves a limited number of routes, primarily within Italy and to a handful of European destinations, with seasonal additions during summer. The terminal is compact and operates efficiently. Car rental desks are in the arrivals area with vehicle collection in the small car park directly in front of the terminal. Because of the airport’s modest size, the arrival and pick-up process is typically one of the quickest in central Italy.
Getting on the road from Perugia Airport
The airport connects to the E45 dual carriageway, the main north-south spine of Umbria. Assisi is approximately 15 km southeast via the SS75, reachable in about 15 minutes. Foligno is 35 km south and Spoleto a further 25 km beyond that. Orvieto is about 90 km southwest via the E45 and A1 motorway. Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake in central Italy, is about 30 km west via the SS75bis. Perugia city centre is 12 km west of the airport. Heading north on the E45, Citta di Castello is 55 km and the route continues into Tuscany.
Why pick up at the airport rather than in the city
Perugia is built on a hilltop with a ZTL covering the historic centre, which makes driving within the city complicated for visitors. The airport sits on the flat plain of the Tiber valley and connects directly to the E45 without passing through the city at all. For most Umbrian itineraries, Assisi, Spoleto, Orvieto, and the Valnerina, starting from the airport and driving directly to the first stop is the simplest approach.
