Porto is one of Europe’s most celebrated city destinations, famous for its historic Ribeira district, port wine cellars and stunning azulejo-tiled architecture. A rental car opens up the wider Norte region, with easy access to the Douro Valley vineyards, the beaches of the Costa Verde, the medieval town of Guimarães and the pilgrimage city of Braga, all within comfortable driving distance.

Exploring Porto and northern Portugal by car
Day trips and routes from Porto
Porto is one of Europe’s most rewarding cities to use as a base for road trips. The Douro Valley wine region begins about 90 km east of Porto via the N108 river road, which follows the Douro through terraced vineyards and granite hillside villages. This is one of the most scenic drives in Portugal and can be combined with a visit to the wine town of Pinhão. The historic university city of Braga is just 55 km north via the A3 and is known for its baroque churches and the hilltop sanctuary of Bom Jesus. The coastal town of Viana do Castelo, gateway to the Minho region, is approximately 70 km north. For longer drives, the national park of Peneda-Gerês in the far north is about 100 km from Porto and offers dramatic mountain scenery. For more destinations, see car rental in Portugal.
Driving and parking in Porto
Porto’s hilly terrain makes the city centre challenging to navigate by car, and parking in the Ribeira and historic centre is very limited. The VCI ring road provides fast access around the city and connects to the main motorways without passing through the centre. Several paid car parks operate near the Clérigos Tower and São Bento station. Portuguese motorways use electronic tolling throughout, so confirm that your rental car includes a tolling device when booking. Pickup at Porto Airport is convenient for heading directly to the Douro Valley or the Minho region without entering the city.
Best time to rent a car in Porto
Porto and northern Portugal have a wetter climate than the south, but spring and summer offer excellent driving conditions. The Douro Valley is at its most spectacular in late September and October, during the grape harvest, when the terraced hillsides turn gold and red. This is also one of the best times to visit the wine lodges in Pinhão. Summer is warm and mostly dry, making it a comfortable season for exploring the coast and the national parks. Winter brings more rain but also far fewer tourists and very peaceful driving conditions along the inland routes.
