Why rent a car at Rome Airport?
Rome Airport (FCO), also known as Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, is the main airport serving Italy’s capital. Renting a car directly at the airport allows you to start your journey immediately after landing and avoid waiting for taxis or public transport.
From the airport, you can easily reach Rome city center, the surrounding Lazio region, and many destinations across central Italy. If you would like to explore the city itself, you can also visit our main page for car rental in Rome.
Picking up your rental car at Rome Airport
About Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO)
Rome Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (IATA: FCO) is Italy’s largest airport and one of the busiest in Europe. The airport has four terminals, with most international flights arriving at Terminal 3. Car rental desks are located in the arrivals area of each terminal, and vehicle collection takes place in the dedicated multi-storey rental car centre, which is accessible by a short internal walkway or shuttle from the terminals. The car rental centre is open around the clock and houses all major rental companies in one location.
Getting on the road from Rome Airport
The airport is located approximately 30 km southwest of Rome city centre, near the town of Fiumicino. From the rental car exit, the A91 motorway connects directly to the Rome ring road (GRA), from which all major routes out of the city are accessible. For destinations south of Rome, such as the Amalfi Coast or Naples, follow the GRA to the A1 or A3 southbound. For destinations north, including Tuscany and Umbria, take the A1 northbound from the GRA. Avoid entering the Rome city centre by car if possible, as the ZTL restrictions apply throughout the historic area. See more about driving in Rome on our Rome car rental page.
Why pick up at the airport rather than in the city
For most visitors to central Italy, picking up at Fiumicino Airport is by far the most practical option. The airport’s position on the ring road network means you can bypass Rome entirely and head directly to your destination. This is especially useful for travellers heading to Tuscany, Umbria, the Lazio hill towns or the Amalfi Coast, as none of these routes require driving through central Rome. Picking up in Rome city centre is only practical if you are spending several days in the city first and collecting the car on departure day.
