Exploring Samos by car
Routes and highlights across Samos
Samos is a lush, forested island in the eastern Aegean, close enough to the Turkish coast that you can see the mountains of Anatolia from the clifftops. A rental car is the most practical way to explore beyond the main port towns. The Heraion of Samos, the ancient sanctuary of Hera and one of the most important temples in the Greek world, is approximately 8 km west of the main port of Pythagoreio and named after the island’s most famous son, the mathematician Pythagoras. The village of Manolates in the forested mountains of the northwest is one of the most beautiful traditional settlements in the Aegean, reached by a winding mountain road about 25 km from the capital Vathy. The Potami beach and waterfall near Karlovasi in the west are approximately 35 km from Vathy. Day trips to Ephesus in Turkey are available by ferry from Pythagoreio or Vathy, and a rental car gets you to both ferry ports easily. Driving conditions in Samos
Samos has a good road network connecting the main towns along the coast. The mountain roads into the interior are narrower and winding but provide access to some of the most scenic parts of the island. Samos Airport (IATA: SMI) is located approximately 3 km from the town of Pythagoreio in the southeast of the island, and car rental facilities are available on site. The northern coast road between Vathy and Karlovasi is one of the most scenic drives on the island, winding through pine forest above the sea.
Best time to rent a car in Samos
May, June and September are the best months for driving in Samos. The island is significantly less crowded than the Cyclades or Dodecanese, and the roads are manageable throughout the season. July and August bring warm temperatures and busy beaches near Pythagoreio, but the mountain villages and the western part of the island remain quiet. Spring is exceptional for the forested mountain roads, when the hillsides are green and wildflowers are in bloom.
