Why rent a car in Tangier?
Tangier is Morocco’s northern gateway, a cosmopolitan port city where Africa and Europe feel remarkably close across the Strait of Gibraltar. A rental car is the ideal way to explore the surrounding region, including the dramatic Caves of Hercules, the scenic Cape Spartel lighthouse, the blue-painted hill town of Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains and the Mediterranean coastline stretching east towards Tetouan and Al Hoceima.
Pick up your car in the city or directly at Tangier Airport and start exploring northern Morocco immediately after arrival. For more destinations across the country, see car rental in Morocco.
Exploring Tangier and northern Morocco by car
Day trips and routes from Tangier
Tangier is Morocco’s northernmost major city and the country’s main connection point with Europe via ferry from Spain. It is an excellent starting point for exploring the culturally distinctive northern region of Morocco. Chefchaouen, the celebrated blue mountain town in the Rif, is approximately 120 km southeast via the A4 motorway and N2 road, a drive of around 90 minutes through mountain scenery. Tetouan, a UNESCO-listed medina with a strong Andalusian architectural heritage, is about 60 km east along the N16 coastal road. The Cap Spartel headland, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, is just 14 km west of Tangier and a rewarding short drive past the Caves of Hercules. For a longer drive, Asilah, a whitewashed Atlantic fortified town with a thriving arts scene, is approximately 45 km south along the coastal N1. For more destinations, see car rental in Morocco.
Driving and parking in Tangier
Tangier has expanded significantly in recent years and the modern city is well connected by wide boulevards and the A4 motorway, which links the city to the rest of Morocco. The Medina and Kasbah are best visited on foot. Paid parking is available near the port and in the city centre. Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (IATA: TNG) is located approximately 15 km southwest of the city centre. Car rental desks are in the arrivals hall. The A4 motorway from the airport connects directly to Casablanca and Rabat in under three hours.
Best time to rent a car in Tangier
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for road trips from Tangier. The northern Rif region receives more rainfall than the rest of Morocco, which means the landscape is green and dramatic in spring. Chefchaouen is at its most photogenic in April and May, before the summer crowds arrive. July and August are warm but humid near the coast, and the route to Chefchaouen can be busy with Moroccan holiday-makers. Winter is mild in Tangier itself, though Rif mountain roads can occasionally be affected by snow at higher altitudes.
