About Tenerife’s two airports
Tenerife has two airports, and it is important to check which one your flight uses before booking your car. Tenerife Sur (IATA: TFS), also known as Reina Sofia Airport, is located in the south of the island near Los Cristianos and handles the majority of international holiday flights. Tenerife Norte (IATA: TFN), also known as Los Rodeos Airport, is located near La Laguna in the north and serves mainly domestic and inter-island flights, as well as some European connections. Car rental desks and vehicle collection areas are available at both airports.
Getting on the road from Tenerife Sur (TFS)
Tenerife Sur is located approximately 60 km south of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island’s capital. From the rental exit, the TF-1 motorway connects you quickly north along the western coast toward Playa de las Americas, Los Gigantes and Santiago del Teide. For Santa Cruz and the north of the island, follow the TF-1 northbound, which runs up the eastern coast. Teide National Park is approximately 60 to 75 minutes from the airport via the TF-28 through Vilaflor. Fuel stations are available within a short distance of the airport on the main exit road.
Why pick up at the airport rather than elsewhere
Given that Tenerife’s most popular resort areas are spread across both the north and south of a large island, collecting your car at the airport is almost always the most practical option. There is no public transport that efficiently connects the two airports to the main resorts, so a rental car picked up directly on arrival gives you immediate independence.
