Picking up your rental car at Trapani Airport
About Trapani Airport (TPS)
Trapani Vincenzo Florio Airport (IATA: TPS) is located approximately 15 km south of Trapani city centre, near the town of Birgi. It is a medium-sized regional airport serving mainly domestic and low-cost European routes, with a strong seasonal presence from northern European carriers during summer. The terminal is a single building and efficient to navigate. Car rental desks are in the arrivals area with vehicle collection in the car park in front of the terminal. The airport has grown significantly in recent years with the expansion of low-cost routes, making western Sicily more accessible than before.
Getting on the road from Trapani Airport
The airport sits beside the SS115, which runs along the western Sicilian coast. Trapani city centre is 15 km north. Marsala is approximately 30 km south via the SS115, around 25 minutes. Segesta archaeological park is 30 km east on the A29 motorway, about 25 minutes. Erice, on its hilltop above Trapani, is reached via the city and a steep ascending road or cable car, about 20 km from the airport. The A29 motorway east connects to Palermo in approximately 80 minutes. For the Zingaro Nature Reserve and San Vito Lo Capo, head north from Trapani on the coastal road, around 40 km in total.
Why pick up at the airport rather than in the city
Most of what makes western Sicily worth visiting is spread across the landscape rather than concentrated in Trapani itself. Picking up a car at the airport means you can head directly to Marsala, Segesta, Erice, or the salt pans without going into the city centre first. The airport’s position near the SS115 also makes it a practical starting point for a full circuit of western Sicily. For more about driving in Italy, see car rental in Italy.
