Exploring the Veneto region by car from Venice
Day trips and routes from Venice
Venice itself is car-free, but the surrounding Veneto region is one of the richest areas in Italy for road trips. Padua (Padova) is just 40 km west via the A4 motorway and is home to Giotto’s famous Scrovegni Chapel and one of the oldest universities in the world. Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet, is approximately 115 km west and reachable in just over an hour. The Euganean Hills south of Padua are a pleasant half-day drive through thermal spa towns and vineyards. The Dolomites begin about 100 km north of Venice via the A27 motorway toward Belluno, with the dramatic Cortina d’Ampezzo valley reachable in around two hours. Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, is about 140 km west via the A4 and offers a full day of scenic driving along its eastern shore. For more destinations, see car rental in Italy.
Practical information about renting near Venice
There are two airports serving Venice. Marco Polo Airport (IATA: VCE), on the mainland shore of the lagoon, is the main international gateway and is approximately 13 km from the Piazzale Roma car park at the entrance to the historic island. Treviso Airport (IATA: TSF), used primarily by Ryanair, is about 30 km northwest of Venice and is a practical option for travellers heading directly to the Dolomites or Lake Garda without visiting the city. Car rental desks are available at both airports. Mestre, the mainland district of Venice, is the most practical base if you plan to use a car throughout your stay, as parking on the island itself is limited to the multi-storey car park at Tronchetto and is very expensive.
Best time to rent a car near Venice
Spring and autumn are ideal for road trips in the Veneto region. Venice itself is extremely crowded in summer and during Carnival in February, but the surrounding countryside and the Dolomites are beautiful in all seasons. The Dolomites are at their most dramatic in summer with long daylight hours, and in winter for skiing, though mountain passes may be closed by snow between November and April. For day trips to Verona, Padua and Lake Garda, May, June and September offer the most comfortable driving conditions with lighter traffic.
