Picking up your rental car at Brindisi Airport
About Brindisi Airport (BDS)
Brindisi Papola Casale Airport (IATA: BDS) is located approximately 6 km north of Brindisi city centre. It is the second busiest airport in Puglia after Bari and handles a significant volume of low-cost and charter traffic, particularly during summer when the Salento coast attracts large numbers of visitors. The terminal is a single-building facility, well-organised and easy to navigate. Car rental desks are in the arrivals area with vehicle collection in the car park directly in front of the terminal. During July and August, demand for rental cars at this airport is very high; booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
Getting on the road from Brindisi Airport
From the airport the SS16 leads south toward Brindisi city and continues down the Adriatic coast. Lecce is 30 km south via the SS613, around 25 minutes. Otranto on the Adriatic coast is approximately 75 km southeast. Gallipoli on the Ionian side is about 80 km south. Alberobello and the Valle d’Itria are approximately 70 km northwest on the SS172. Taranto is about 70 km west. Bari and its airport are around 115 km north via the SS16, a journey of about 80 minutes.
Why pick up at the airport rather than in the city
Brindisi Airport is the most practical pickup point for any itinerary focused on the Salento peninsula. The airport sits at the northern edge of the Salento and connects directly to the road south, meaning Lecce is reachable in under 30 minutes of departure. Driving is the only practical way to explore the best of the Salento: the coastal masserie, hidden coves, and small inland towns are spread across a large area and poorly served by public transport. For more about driving in the region, see car rental in Bari and car rental in Italy.
