Exploring Corfu by car
Routes and highlights across Corfu
Corfu is one of Greece’s most varied islands and is best explored by car. The northern part of the island, including the resort of Kassiopi and the dramatic cape at Sidari, is around 40 km from Corfu Town along the northern coastal road. The west coast beaches, including Glyfada, Paleokastritsa and Agios Gordios, are among the most beautiful in Greece and are all reachable within 30 to 45 minutes from the capital. The Achilleion Palace, built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, is just 12 km south of Corfu Town and makes for a short but rewarding visit. The village of Pelekas in the island’s hilly interior offers panoramic views across both coasts and is a popular viewpoint at sunset. For more destinations, see car rental in the Ionian Islands or car rental in Greece.
Driving conditions in Corfu
The main roads on Corfu connect the capital to the main resort areas and are well maintained. Secondary roads toward the mountain villages and the more remote northern beaches are narrower and sometimes unpaved for short sections, but a standard rental car is sufficient for all popular routes. Corfu Town itself has very limited parking and heavy traffic during the tourist season, so it is advisable to park on the outskirts and walk into the old town. The Corfu Airport is located just 2 km south of the town centre, making airport pickup very convenient.
Best time to rent a car in Corfu
Corfu has a lush, green landscape compared to many other Greek islands, thanks to higher rainfall in spring and autumn. May and June are excellent months for driving, with warm temperatures, green hillsides and quiet roads. July and August are very busy near the main beach resorts, but the interior and northern villages remain accessible and peaceful. September and October offer warm sea temperatures and golden light, making it an ideal period for scenic drives. Car rental availability drops significantly outside the April to October season.
