Picking up your rental car at Genoa Airport
About Genoa Airport (GOA)
Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (IATA: GOA) is built partly on a reclaimed platform extending into the sea, just 6 km west of Genoa city centre. It is a compact regional airport serving mainly European routes, with regular connections from several northern European cities. The terminal is single-level and easy to navigate. Car rental desks are in the arrivals area, with vehicle collection in the car park directly adjacent to the terminal. The airport is small enough that the process from landing to driving away is typically under 30 minutes outside of peak arrival slots.
Getting on the road from Genoa Airport
The airport connects directly to the A7 and A10 motorways. Heading east, the A7 feeds into the A26 and then the A12, which runs along the coast toward Rapallo, Chiavari, and La Spezia. Portofino is approximately 30 km east on the coastal road. The Cinque Terre (Riomaggiore) is about 90 km east on the A12, around 60 to 70 minutes. Heading west, the A10 leads toward Savona and on toward Nice and the French Riviera, approximately 150 km away. Milan is about 150 km north on the A7.
Why pick up at the airport rather than in the city
Genoa’s geography, a narrow strip of city between the mountains and the sea, makes its streets some of the most complex to navigate in Italy. The historic centre has ZTL restrictions and the road layout is not intuitive. Collecting the car at the airport, which sits just outside the urban area and connects directly to the motorway, is considerably simpler than picking up in the city centre. For most coastal itineraries along the Riviera, the airport is also a more logical starting point. For more about driving in the area, see car rental in Genoa and car rental in Italy.
