Exploring Kalamata and the Peloponnese by car
Day trips and routes from Kalamata
Kalamata is the main city of the Peloponnese and one of the most underrated bases for road trips in Greece. The Mani peninsula, one of the most dramatic and historically distinctive landscapes in the country, begins about 40 km south of Kalamata. The deep Mani, around the villages of Areopoli and Gerolimenas, is characterised by tower houses, Byzantine churches and a stark, rocky coastline unlike anywhere else in Greece. Mystras, the UNESCO World Heritage Byzantine ghost city built on a steep hillside above Sparta, is approximately 55 km northeast via the road through the Taygetos mountain pass. Ancient Sparta itself is about 60 km northeast. The village of Kardamyli, celebrated by the travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor who lived there for decades, is about 30 km south along the coastal road and is one of the most charming villages in the Peloponnese. Spring and autumn are the finest seasons for road trips in the Peloponnese. April and May bring wildflowers to the Mani hillsides and comfortable temperatures for driving the mountain passes. July and August are very hot in the interior, though the coastal roads of the Mani and Kardamyli remain enjoyable. October is an excellent month for the Peloponnese, with golden light, harvested olive groves and almost no tourist traffic on even the most popular routes.
