Why rent a car in Larnaca?
Larnaca is one of Cyprus’s most accessible cities, home to the iconic Church of Saint Lazarus, a long seafront promenade and the striking Salt Lake that attracts flamingos in winter. A rental car opens up the wider island, with the Troodos Mountains, the Venetian walls of Nicosia, the mosaics of Paphos and the stunning beaches of the Akamas peninsula all within comfortable driving distance.
Pick up your car in the city or directly at Larnaca Airport and start exploring Cyprus immediately after arrival. For more destinations across the island, see car rental in Cyprus.
Exploring Larnaca and Cyprus by car
Routes and highlights from Larnaca
Larnaca is the main entry point for Cyprus and an excellent base for exploring the island by car. The A1 and A5 motorways connect Larnaca to the other main cities: Limassol is about 70 km west and Nicosia about 50 km north. Paphos and its archaeological park with UNESCO-listed Roman mosaic floors is about 140 km west, a comfortable two-hour drive along the southern motorway. The Troodos Mountains, home to a series of painted Byzantine churches also listed by UNESCO, are accessible from Larnaca via Nicosia in about 90 minutes. The Akamas Peninsula in the far west, one of the last genuinely wild areas of Cyprus, requires a full day’s drive but is very rewarding. Closer to Larnaca, the salt lake beside the airport is one of the best places in the Mediterranean to observe flamingos in winter, and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque on its shore is one of the most important Islamic sites on the island. Driving and parking in Larnaca
Cyprus drives on the left, a legacy of British rule that ended in 1960. Drivers from mainland Europe will need to adjust, but roads are wide and well-signposted in both English and Greek, which makes navigation straightforward. Larnaca International Airport (IATA: LCA) is located just 5 km southwest of the city centre and has car rental desks in the arrivals hall with vehicles collected in the adjacent rental area. Parking in Larnaca is generally easy and inexpensive. The A1 motorway connecting Larnaca to Limassol and Paphos is free of charge, as are all motorways on Cyprus.
Best time to rent a car in Larnaca
Cyprus has one of the longest warm seasons in the Mediterranean. April through October is reliably warm to hot, with July and August reaching 38 degrees Celsius on the coast. For driving, April, May and October offer the most comfortable conditions with clear skies and temperatures between 22 and 28 degrees. The Troodos Mountains provide a cooler alternative in summer, with temperatures around 10 degrees lower than the coast. Winter on the coast is mild (15 to 18 degrees) and largely rain-free, making Cyprus a practical year-round driving destination.
