Routes and highlights from Preveza
Preveza is the gateway to some of the most rewarding and least crowded driving routes in Greece. The ancient site of Nikopolis, founded by Augustus to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, is just 7 km north of Preveza and is one of the largest Roman sites in Greece. The beaches of Ammoudia and Sivota on the Epirus coast are within 40 km north via the coastal road. The Acheron River, associated in Greek mythology with the underworld, flows into the sea about 35 km north of Preveza near Mesopotamos. For a longer drive inland, the Zagori region in the Pindus mountains, famous for its stone-arched bridges, traditional villages and the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world, begins approximately 100 km northeast via Ioannina. Lefkada island, connected to the mainland by a causeway, is approximately 35 km south of Preveza. For more destinations, see car rental in the Ionian Islands and car rental in Greece.
Driving and parking in Preveza
Preveza Aktion Airport (IATA: PVK), also referred to as Lefkada Airport, is located approximately 35 km south of Preveza city centre and 20 km north of Lefkada island. The road between the airport and Preveza follows the western coast of the Ambracian Gulf and is straightforward to drive. Preveza city centre is compact and easily navigated; parking is available along the seafront promenade and in the small streets of the old town. The main road south from the airport crosses the causeway onto Lefkada in about 20 minutes. Roads in the wider Epirus region are generally well-maintained on the main routes, though mountain roads toward Zagori are winding and require more time than distances suggest.
Best time to rent a car in Preveza
May, June and September are the best months for driving from Preveza. The coastal beaches are warm and swimmable, the roads to the Acheron delta and the Epirus villages are quiet, and the Zagori region is at its most scenic before the summer heat. July and August bring charter arrivals from northern Europe to Preveza Airport, making the airport itself busy and accommodation around Lefkada and Preveza in high demand; the roads are manageable but booking a car well in advance is essential. Spring (April to May) is particularly rewarding for the Zagori region, when the mountain meadows are in flower and the Vikos Gorge has its best water levels.
