Why rent a car in Sardinia?
Sardinia, like neighboring island Sicily, is known for its crystal-clear waters, scenic coastal roads, and charming towns. With a rental car, you can explore famous areas such as the Costa Smeralda, the beaches around Olbia, and historic towns like Alghero and Cagliari at your own pace.
Having a car also makes it easy to discover hidden coves, nature parks, and inland villages that are difficult to reach by public transport. Start planning your trip by exploring car rental options in Italy.
Exploring Sardinia by car
Routes and highlights across Sardinia
Sardinia rewards car travellers more than almost any other Mediterranean island. The island’s size and diversity make it impossible to explore properly without your own transport. The SS131 motorway runs north to south through the island’s centre, connecting Cagliari in the south to Sassari in the north in about two hours. From this backbone, smaller roads branch out to the coast and into the mountains. The Costa Smeralda in the northeast, famous for its emerald waters and luxury resorts, is best explored from Olbia. The western coast around Alghero offers a completely different character, with Spanish-influenced architecture and dramatic limestone cliffs at Capo Caccia. The Gennargentu mountain range in the interior reaches over 1,800 metres and contains Sardinia’s wildest and most remote scenery, accessible only by car. Driving conditions in Sardinia
Roads along the northern and western coasts are well maintained and straightforward to navigate. The SS125 along the eastern coast, often called the Orientale Sarda, is one of the most spectacular coastal drives in the Mediterranean but is winding and requires more time than distances suggest. Mountain roads into the Gennargentu and Supramonte areas are narrow and sometimes steep, but a standard rental car handles them without difficulty. Fuel stations are plentiful in towns but less frequent in the interior, so fill up before heading into remote areas. Road signs across the island include Sardinian language alongside Italian, which can occasionally cause confusion on smaller routes.
Best time to rent a car in Sardinia
May, June and September are the best months for road trips in Sardinia. The sea is warm, the roads are uncongested and the island’s landscapes are at their most colourful. July and August bring intense heat and very heavy traffic near the Costa Smeralda and the most popular beaches, with parking near the coast often impossible without arriving very early. The interior and mountain regions remain accessible and peaceful year-round. October offers golden light, cool mornings and almost no tourist traffic, making it an underrated time for driving through the island’s interior.
