Why rent a car in Thessaloniki?
Thessaloniki is Greece’s second largest city and one of its most vibrant, known for its Byzantine heritage, excellent food scene and lively waterfront. A rental car gives you easy access to the Mount Olympus region, the archaeological sites of Vergina and Pella, the Chalkidiki peninsula with its three distinct coastlines and the monasteries of Mount Athos nearby.

Exploring Thessaloniki and northern Greece by car
Routes and highlights from Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is Greece’s second city and the natural base for exploring northern Greece, a region that sees far fewer international visitors than the islands but offers exceptional scenery and history. The Chalkidiki peninsula, with its three distinct fingers of land extending into the Aegean, is about 70 km southeast of the city. The first finger, Kassandra, has the most developed resort infrastructure; the second, Sithonia, is quieter with unspoiled coves and a forested interior. To the west, Vergina is about 75 km from Thessaloniki and contains the Royal Macedonian Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the tomb of Philip II of Macedon was discovered. Lake Prespa, a tranquil border lake shared with North Macedonia and Albania and a significant birdwatching destination, is about 190 km west via Florina. Driving and parking in Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki Macedonia International Airport (IATA: SKG) is located about 16 km southeast of the city centre and has car rental desks in the arrivals hall. From the airport the Periferiaki Odos ring road provides the clearest route into and around the city without navigating the congested city centre streets. Driving in central Thessaloniki can be slow due to heavy traffic and limited parking near the main sights along the seafront. Paid parking garages are the most practical option for city visits. On the E75 and E90 motorways radiating from the city, toll booths operate and cash or a card is required.
Best time to rent a car in Thessaloniki
June and September are the best months for driving from Thessaloniki. The Chalkidiki beaches are warm enough for swimming (sea temperatures around 24 degrees) without the peak August congestion on the approach roads. Spring (April to May) is excellent for the inland routes toward Vergina and Lake Prespa, with green landscapes and very little tourist traffic. July and August are the busiest months on the Chalkidiki roads and the Friday evening drive from Thessaloniki to the peninsula can be very slow; an early morning start makes a significant difference. Winters in Thessaloniki are cool (2 to 8 degrees) and driving to the mountains after November may require winter tyres.
