Why rent a car in Fez?
Fez is one of the world’s best-preserved medieval cities and Morocco’s cultural and spiritual heart, home to the oldest university in the world and a labyrinthine medina that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A rental car gives you easy access to the surrounding region, including the cedar forests and Barbary macaques of Azrou, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the holy city of Moulay Idriss and the scenic Middle Atlas mountains.
Pick up your car in the city or directly at Fez Airport and start exploring central Morocco immediately after arrival. For more destinations across the country, see car rental in Morocco.
Exploring Fez and the imperial cities by car
Day trips and routes from Fez
Fez is the cultural and spiritual capital of Morocco and an essential stop on any Moroccan road trip. The Fes el-Bali Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest continuously inhabited medieval city in the world and it is best explored on foot, as vehicles cannot enter most of its narrow streets. A rental car is most valuable for exploring the wider region around Fez. Meknes, another imperial city with magnificent Moorish gates and the ruins of the sultan’s palace complex, is approximately 60 km west via the A2 motorway. Volubilis, Morocco’s most impressive Roman ruins, is about 30 km north of Meknes and easily combined in a day trip from Fez. The cedar forests and Barbary ape colonies of Azrou in the Middle Atlas are approximately 80 km south via the N8 road. Chefchaouen, the famous blue-painted mountain town in the Rif, is about 200 km northwest and makes for an excellent overnight excursion. For more destinations, see car rental in Morocco.
Driving and parking in Fez
Fez has a clear division between the ancient Medina and the modern Ville Nouvelle. Driving and parking in the Ville Nouvelle is straightforward, with wide French-planned boulevards. The Medina is entirely inaccessible by car. Most visitors park at the edge of the Medina near Bab Bou Jeloud or Bab Guissa and enter on foot. Fez Saiss Airport (IATA: FEZ) is located approximately 12 km south of the city centre. Car rental desks are in the arrivals hall and the airport connects to the city via the N8 road.
Best time to rent a car in Fez
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the ideal seasons for road trips from Fez. Summer temperatures in the city regularly exceed 38 degrees Celsius and driving in the heat can be tiring. The cedar forests of the Middle Atlas are at their most pleasant in spring, when snow may still be visible on the higher peaks. The route to Chefchaouen is best driven in spring or early autumn, when the mountain air is crisp and the blue city is less crowded with visitors.
