Why rent a car at Santorini Airport?
Santorini Airport (JTR) is the main arrival point for most visitors traveling to the island. Renting a car directly at the airport allows you to start your trip immediately and avoid waiting for taxis or public transport.
From the airport you can easily reach popular destinations such as Fira, Oia, Kamari, and Perissa. If you want to explore the island in more detail, you can also visit our main page for car rental in Santorini.
Picking up your rental car at Santorini Airport
About Santorini Airport (JTR)
Santorini Thira Airport (IATA: JTR) is located on the eastern side of the island, approximately 5 km southeast of Fira and about 15 km from Oia. It is a medium-sized island airport handling a large volume of charter and low-cost routes during the May to October season, as well as year-round domestic connections from Athens. The terminal is a single building that can become very busy during peak summer arrival windows. Car rental desks are located in or just outside the arrivals area, with vehicles collected in the small car park in front of the terminal. During July and August demand for rental cars on Santorini is very high; booking well in advance is essential.
Getting on the road from Santorini Airport
Santorini is a small island and distances are short, but the roads are narrow and winding. From the airport, Fira is approximately 5 km northwest, a drive of around 10 minutes. Oia, at the northern tip of the island and the most photographed village on Santorini, is about 18 km from the airport via Fira, taking around 30 minutes. The black sand beaches of Perissa and Perivolos are just 5 km south of the airport, the closest beaches to the terminal. Akrotiri, the Minoan archaeological site and the famous red beach nearby, is approximately 15 km southwest. The village of Pyrgos, the highest point on the island with panoramic caldera views, is about 8 km west.
Why pick up at the airport rather than in the city
Santorini’s public bus network connects the main villages but runs on limited schedules and is very crowded in summer. A rental car gives you the freedom to reach the quieter parts of the island, the eastern coast, the inland villages, and the less-visited beaches, at your own pace. Picking up at the airport means you can head directly to your accommodation without waiting for a bus or paying for a transfer taxi.
