Why rent a car in Santorini?
Santorini is one of the most iconic islands in the world, famous for its dramatic caldera views, blue-domed churches and spectacular sunsets over Oia. A rental car lets you explore beyond the most visited spots, with easy access to the ancient ruins of Akrotiri, the traditional village of Pyrgos, the volcanic black sand beaches of Perissa and Kamari and the quieter southern part of the island.
Pick up your car directly at Santorini Airport and start exploring the island immediately after arrival. For more destinations across the islands, see car rental in the Cyclades.
Exploring Santorini by car
Routes and highlights across Santorini
Santorini is a compact island and most destinations are reachable within 30 minutes by car, which makes a rental car particularly practical here. The main road runs along the spine of the island from Oia in the north to Akrotiri in the south. Oia, famous for its sunsets and blue-domed churches, is approximately 12 km from the capital Fira. The ancient Minoan site of Akrotiri, one of the best-preserved prehistoric settlements in the Mediterranean, is about 14 km southwest of Fira. The black sand beaches of Perissa and Perivolos are on the southeastern coast and are easily reached in under 20 minutes. The hilltop village of Pyrgos, the highest point on the island, offers panoramic views across the caldera and is far quieter than the main tourist areas. For more destinations, see car rental in the Cyclades or car rental in Greece.
Driving conditions in Santorini
Roads on Santorini are generally well maintained along the main routes, though narrow in the older villages. Oia and Fira themselves are largely pedestrian and cannot be driven through, so parking at the entrance and continuing on foot is standard practice. The road toward Akrotiri and the southern beaches is wider and straightforward to navigate. Parking in peak summer can be competitive near the most popular viewpoints, so early morning visits are strongly recommended. Fuel stations are available in Fira and near the airport road.
Best time to rent a car in Santorini
Santorini is at its most manageable in May, June and September. July and August bring very large numbers of visitors to a small island, making parking near Oia and Fira genuinely difficult and adding to journey times on the main road. Spring offers pleasant temperatures and far fewer crowds, while September combines warm sea temperatures with noticeably lighter traffic. The island largely closes from November to March, with very limited rental availability outside the main season.
